At the beginning of this year, torrential rains brought catastrophic floods to the nation of Malawi. Hundreds of lives were lost, nearly a quarter million people were left homeless, 64,000 hectares of land were devastated and much of the country’s maize crops destroyed. This month, Malawi’s agriculture minister predicted a ‘substantial decrease’ in the maize harvest because of both floods and drought that affected the crop growth. In short, this means people will go hungry.
AP Malawi Director, Moses Mtambo, saw this coming and made plans to purchase 50 kg bags of maize to each Chifundo household and the Chifundo team. When the time of hunger hit our Kaliyeka Township community, Pastor Mtambo and his team were ready. He writes:
I am happy to report that our maize distribution day was a great gathering and everything went smoothly! Having our own land and AP compound makes everything so much easier – especially large distributions like this one. On this day, 120 Chifundo households, the Chifundo team and other key partners have each received one 50kg bag of maize. (50 kg is approximately 110 pounds)
All of the guardians, team and children want to express their gratitude for this help and promise to pray for Ancient Path in both the USA and here in Malawi, and for all of our partners. I would also like to express my gratitude to the AP Board of Directors and all of our partners for your timely response to our request for assistance. Your support came at just the right time. May God bless you all!
Thank you to everyone who responded and gave to maize relief. As always, 100% of these Chifundo funds went directly to Malawi and were used to purchase food. We are also grateful for the faithful AP team doing the hard work on the ground in Malawi and for all the generous supporters here in the US that make that work possible. We are all in this together! And last but not least – to all those amazing women hauling 110 pound sacks on their heads with grace and dignity, you have our utmost respect!
