In Malawi, over 80% of the population are subsistence farmers and 70% live below the international poverty line on less than $1.90 a day. Malawians are hard-working, resourceful people, but drought, floods, and soil degradation all contribute to crop failure, poor harvests, escalating maize prices, and hunger.
Malawians have a saying: Chimanga ndi Moyo. Maize is life. As long as they have maize, they have hope for tomorrow. Sometimes, it’s necessary to share what we have to give them both.
