Julianne Park is a singer extraordinaire; a woman with a big voice, a big personality – and an even bigger heart. As a voice student at Boston Conservatory, Julianne wept one winter’s night as she heard Patt Wadenpfuhl speak about God’s heart for the poor, and particularly the children of Africa. Her immediate response was to see for herself and within a few months, she was in Malawi with a team- surrounded by children.
For two weeks, Julianne prepared and served food, played games and helped with choir practice, bandaged wounds and soothed troubled hearts. One of her favorite responsibilities was teaching a beginning English class for several of the children hoping to go on to secondary school. A favorite memory for all of us was the day Julianne sang an aria for them. Having never heard opera before, their eyes widened as her voice echoed off the metal roof and, inevitably, they began to giggle. Within moments, the giggles turned to awe, their world just a bit bigger. Later, one of the older girls told me that she’d like to be a singer one day – just like Jules.
Of course, all of this made it difficult to get on a plane and head back to the US. During her stay in Malawi, Julianne had been learning a Russian opera for an upcoming New York performance (and we had the joy of listening to her practice sessions!) But as time drew near to leave, Julianne began to question the significance of her profession. When surrounded by so much need, how can opera matter?
She did return to New York and continued to perform around the world, but she didn’t stop looking for ways to make a difference. When she called asking if we would mind if she performed a benefit concert for our orphan and vulnerable children project, Chifundo’s Basket, we thanked her profusely. The next thing we heard, Julianne had raised over $4000 to feed and clothe hungry children at a one-night performance in her home state of Washington.
Julianne is a busy woman, but she has already sent the check for Chifundo’s Basket – 100% of which will go directly to aid the most desperate children around the world. She also promises to send her benefit concert details soon – so stay posted…
