Sending your child to a school with a student-teacher ratio of 150-1, no text books, not enough desks, and, very often, no classroom.

Imagine having your academic future determined by one exam in the 8th grade – an exam that you study for using only the hand-written notes in your copy book. If you pass at the highest level, you are automatically placed in a high school. If you pass with mid-high to average scores you can advance, but the problem is finding the money for private school fees, uniforms, shoes and school supplies.

Imagine being intelligent and hungry to learn but without the means to buy a copy book or a pen or a uniform, let alone pay monthly school fees.

This is the reality that our kids at Ancient Path Malawi face every day.

And that is why we have started a secondary school scholarship program and now have nine young people enrolled at an excellent private academy, Chifuniro Secondary School!

In the past few months, we have purchased multiple sets of textbooks for each level – from grade 5 to grade 12 – and established a lending library. Several days a week our students gather after school at Ancient Path to share books and receive personal tutoring from the AP staff. They are working hard, but they need your help.

The cost to send one child to Chifuniro is $20 a month for 12 months, or $240 per year. This includes the school fees ($60 per term) school uniform, shoes, school supplies, and the after-school tutoring program.

Only a small percentage of children in Malawi ever make it past primary school – especially in townships like Kaliyeka. Only a fraction of that percentage actually complete high school and attain their diploma.

But there is great reason for hope at Ancient Path Malawi. Our high school students, and all the younger ones coming up behind them, are determined to graduate. Some even dare to dream of university – and why not?
