movie night: Ordinary Radicals

Friday. January 30th. 7 pm. BSTS.* (bring snacks to share)

On January 30th, we’ll start our monthly movies at the Ancient Path house with an independent film called Ordinary Radicals. This 99 minute DVD tracks Shane Claiborne – author of Irresistible Revolution – and ” a rag-tag group of ordinary radicals”  as they cross the US on a tour to promote his new book Jesus for President.

It’s a conversation starter, to say the least.

Their website states that “in the margins of the United States, there lives a revolutionary Christianity. One with a quiet disposition that seeks to do “small things with great love,” and in so doing is breaking 21st Century stereotypes surrounding this 2000 year old faith.” The film breaks those stereotypes and asks penetrating questions about this 2000 year old faith that exposes false paradigms.

As Shane Claiborne and Chris Haw write in their new  book, “This is not a set of political suggestions for the world; this is about invoking and embodying the alternative. All of this is an invitation to join a peculiar people- those with no king but God, who practice jubilee economics and make the world new. This is not the old-time religion of going to heaven; this is about bringing heaven to the world.”

Anyway, it’s a well-made, fun film to watch and a great way to start the year. We’ll hang out on floor pillows and whatever couches we have and munch on snacks. A friend just donated a television that’s as big as my house, so it will be enjoyable viewing.  and we’ll definitely have enough to talk about when the film is over:)

We do have a small room for children to watch their own video – something fun – so feel free to bring your kids. We’d love for families to attend movie nights together. The children can  watch age-appropriate videos in the room we provide for them or sit quietly with you. And we’re a community – so we’ll all help each other!
