In Malawi, tailoring has traditionally been a male profession, but this is changing. To empower women, we purchased multiple sewing machines and started tailoring training programs in Kaliyeka Township and Dzaleka Refugee Camp.
In Kaliyeka, the students come several days weekly to learn new skills from our skilled and patient instructor, Gwape. Many are now able to make clothes for their families and earn a little money on the side.
At Dzaleka Camp, we are getting ready to graduate another class of 16 students next month. The graduation ceremony is a celebration like no other, as students model the colorful clothes they have created. Family members cheer and rush forward as certificates are awarded.
Creating a beautiful piece of clothing is a visible achievement and clothing your children by your own hand brings joy. The possibility of feeding your family with new, creative skills brings hope.
